COVER STORY

Tsitsi Mutendi

Founder
African Family Firms

Tsitsi Mutendi has dedicated her career to building institutions that create lasting impact. Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, she is a respected family business advisor, speaker, author, and education leader whose work focuses on helping African families, businesses, and schools thrive across generations. Her journey began in publishing, but a personal decision to create the best possible education for her own children led her toward a much bigger purpose. Together with her husband, Daniel, she founded Mutendi Montessori Day School, which later became the foundation of Chiratidzo Education Group. Alongside this, she established Nhaka Legacy Planning, a family governance and legacy advisory practice, and co-founded African Family Firms, a platform that connects family businesses across the continent.

Through every role she has taken on, her mission has remained the same – to help build institutions that last far beyond the people who created them. We at CIO Global, are proud to introduce Tsitsi Mutendi as one of the 10 Distinguished Leaders Making an Impact in Africa, 2026.

Her journey has always been driven by purpose rather than personal achievement. While her career has evolved across publishing, education, family business advisory, and public speaking, each step has been connected by a single belief that strong institutions create stronger societies. She believes Africa’s future depends not only on successful entrepreneurs but also on organisations that can survive leadership changes, adapt to new challenges, and continue serving communities for generations. Through her work across Africa, she has helped business owners, educators, policymakers, and next-generation leaders understand the importance of governance, succession, and long-term thinking. She measures success not by awards or recognition but by seeing children grow into confident leaders, families preserve their unity and wealth, and organisations develop the strength to endure.

“Leadership becomes meaningful when it creates opportunities that outlive the leader.”

The inspiration behind her leadership came from her own family. When she and Daniel became parents, they wanted to create the best educational environment for their three children. Rather than accepting the existing options, they decided to build something themselves. Inspired by the Montessori philosophy of believing in every child, they established Mutendi Montessori Day School. Watching their children flourish within this learning environment confirmed that they had chosen the right path. Their eldest child achieved remarkable academic success at a young age, reinforcing their confidence in the school’s approach. Over time, what began as a personal solution for their family grew into a broader mission to provide children across Africa with an education that develops not only academic excellence but also creativity, leadership, confidence, and emotional intelligence.

Today, Chiratidzo Education Group represents a much larger vision than operating successful schools. The organisation aims to create an education ecosystem that supports learners, educators, and families while contributing to national development. Its educational philosophy combines Montessori principles with future-focused subjects such as artificial intelligence, robotics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, environmental responsibility, leadership, and digital citizenship. At the same time, the schools celebrate African culture and heritage, ensuring students develop a strong sense of identity while gaining globally competitive skills. Through Nhaka Legacy Planning, Tsitsi also helps family businesses prepare for successful succession by focusing not only on financial wealth but also on governance, shared values, and family unity. African Family Firms further strengthens this mission by creating opportunities for family enterprises across the continent to learn from one another and develop governance models suited to African realities.

Among her proudest achievements is transforming a single school into the beginning of a continental education network. She takes pride in seeing the success of her children alongside the growth of the institutions she and her husband have built together. For Tsitsi, the greatest achievement is turning meaningful ideas into organisations that can continue serving communities long after their founders step away. She is equally proud that her work proves African institutions can achieve international standards while remaining deeply rooted in African history, culture, and values. Through her advisory work, speaking engagements, book Raising the Baobab, and the Enterprising Families Podcast, she continues to shape conversations around family governance, succession, and legacy across Africa.

“Education shapes generations, but values ensure they endure.”

Like many leaders building multiple organisations, Tsitsi has faced significant challenges. Managing schools, advisory services, business communities, and numerous stakeholders requires discipline, strong governance, and clear organisational structures. She believes growth naturally increases complexity, making communication, culture, and shared purpose more important than technical expertise alone. Rather than relying solely on determination, she has focused on building capable teams, empowering leaders, and creating systems that allow people to succeed. Her experience has taught her that resilience is about remaining flexible while staying true to core values. She also credits much of her success to her partnership with Daniel and to the dedicated teams who have helped bring their shared vision to life.

Creating positive impact across Africa remains central to everything Tsitsi does. Through education, she is preparing young people to become ethical leaders who understand both their African identity and their global responsibilities. Through family business advisory services, she helps entrepreneurs preserve businesses, relationships, and wealth across generations. She believes the true measure of impact is multiplication. Every child who becomes a responsible leader, every business that survives into future generations, and every educator who inspires hundreds of learners creates benefits that extend far beyond one individual. Her ambition is to strengthen Africa by building institutions where education, entrepreneurship, governance, and culture work together to create lasting national development.

Raising the Baobab F

Integrity, stewardship, humility, courage, and purpose guide every decision she makes. She believes leaders are temporary caretakers of institutions rather than owners, with the responsibility to leave them stronger for future generations. She values listening, continuous learning, and making decisions based on long-term sustainability rather than short-term success. Innovation, in her view, should always serve a meaningful purpose. At Chiratidzo, technology is introduced not because it is new, but because it improves learning and prepares students for the future while preserving the human values at the heart of education. She encourages experimentation, invests heavily in professional development, and creates an environment where curiosity and learning never stop.

Looking ahead, Tsitsi sees enormous opportunities for Africa. She believes the continent’s young population, growing digital economy, and increasing regional collaboration position it for remarkable growth. She expects education, family governance, and entrepreneurship to become key drivers of sustainable development. Her long-term vision is to expand Chiratidzo into a respected network of schools across Africa while growing Nhaka Legacy Planning and African Family Firms into trusted institutions that support families and businesses across generations. Above all, she hopes to leave behind organisations that continue transforming lives long after her leadership has ended. For Tsitsi Mutendi, true leadership is not measured by personal success but by the enduring institutions that continue serving future generations.

“Strong institutions are the greatest legacy any leader can leave behind.”
